If you run Odoo 17, standard support ended in September 2026, so Odoo no longer ships security updates for your version. Every month you wait widens the gap to the current release, and Odoo itself notes that smaller version gaps make easier upgrades.

Odoo 20, launched at Odoo Experience 2026, is now the newest version. This post explains what changed for UAE, Saudi and Pakistani businesses, who should upgrade now, who should wait, and how to plan it.

Odoo 20: what Odoo announced at Odoo Experience 2026

Odoo Experience 2026 ran at Brussels Expo from 24 to 26 September, and the new major version was unveiled in the opening keynote. Odoo's own announcement, "Meet Odoo 20", is dated 24 September 2026. The official release notes list it as released in September 2026.

The headline themes are clear from Odoo's release notes:

  • AI agents that run processes. You describe a process in plain language and an agent automates it, for example confirming a sales order when a matching email arrives.
  • Connect external AI tools. Your database can be connected to outside AI tools through MCP (Model Context Protocol), with access rights intact.
  • AI needs credits. The release notes state that all AI features now need credits bought through Odoo's in-app purchases (IAP). Budget for this.
  • Offline mode. Users can create and edit records without a connection, and changes sync when they reconnect.
  • Accounting assistant and audits. You can ask an accounting agent about receivables or cash flow, and run a reconciliation audit with recommendations.
  • Purchase and inventory. Suggested minimum and maximum stock levels from the last 30 days of sales, plus stronger bill-to-purchase-order matching.

Odoo 20 localisation changes for the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan

The country-level changes matter more to most of our readers than the AI demos. These are taken from the localisation section of the Odoo 20 release notes.

United Arab Emirates. The chart of accounts has been redesigned around IFRS and the UAE Commercial Companies Law, with a 6-digit structure. Payroll gains an Emiratization Compliance report, DIFC DEWS treatment, an improved WPS export, non-salary employer costs and an end-of-service liability report. The UAE section does not list a dedicated e-invoicing feature, so plan your UAE e-invoicing readiness separately.

Saudi Arabia. ZATCA submission now sits inside the Send wizard with pre-checks and batch sending. Invoices are no longer blocked after a ZATCA timeout or outage, and Building and Secondary Numbers are restricted to four digits to prevent validation errors. Payroll adds GOSI integration, a GOSI wages update sheet and improved end-of-service calculations, which matters if your ZATCA Phase 2 setup has been fragile.

Pakistan. Odoo 20 adds an integration with the FBR e-invoicing system for registered businesses, referencing S.R.O. 1852(I)/2025. Point of Sale gains real-time FBR reporting for Tier-1 retailers, and the chart of accounts and taxes have been reworked around the Companies Act 2017 and the Sales Tax Act.

Elsewhere in the GCC, Oman gets a base payroll package with WPS file generation and Kuwait gets a base payroll package. The Saudi Central Bank is also added as an exchange rate provider.

Who should upgrade to Odoo 20 now, and who should wait

Odoo's support policy drives this decision. Each major version gets three years of standard support, and security updates only come during that period.

Your current version End of standard support Our general recommendation
Odoo 16 or older Already ended Plan a project now; the larger gap means more testing
Odoo 17 September 2026 Upgrade now; security updates have stopped
Odoo 18 September 2027 (planned) Plan for 2027; go straight to Odoo 20
Odoo 19 September 2028 (planned) Wait unless an Odoo 20 feature solves a real problem
New implementation Not applicable Start on Odoo 20 if your required apps and localisation are ready

Upgrade now if you are on Odoo 17, if Saudi ZATCA or GOSI handling costs your team time each month, or if you are a Pakistani business affected by FBR e-invoicing or Tier-1 POS reporting.

Wait if you are on Odoo 19 with heavy custom modules, or if you are mid-way through a year-end close or a compliance project. Odoo 19 remains supported until September 2028, so there is no rush for its own sake.

Odoo 20 for Community vs Enterprise users

The edition you run changes both what you get and how you upgrade. Odoo's editions page lists version upgrades as an Enterprise benefit, along with full Accounting, Payroll, Studio, Planning, Field Service and the AI features in Invoicing.

For Enterprise users, Odoo's upgrade platform produces a test database first, then the production upgrade. On Odoo Online, major-version upgrades become mandatory on Odoo's schedule, so you should test when invited rather than wait for the deadline.

For Community users, the most visible Odoo 20 gains, such as the AI agents and the GCC payroll improvements, sit in Enterprise apps. Your upgrade is also a self-managed migration project. Our guide to Odoo Community vs Enterprise helps you decide whether this is the moment to switch editions.

Custom modules: the hidden cost of an Odoo 20 upgrade

Odoo's documentation is direct: a database with custom modules cannot be upgraded until those modules are available for the target version. This is usually where time and budget go.

Odoo 20 changes several foundations that custom code relies on:

  • Record rules have been removed in favour of domains on access rights.
  • Mail tracking values have been replaced by tracking generated on the fly.
  • Account groups have been replaced by parent accounts, and asset models by depreciation models.

Each custom module needs reviewing, porting and testing. Our post on when custom development in Odoo is worth it is a useful filter, because an upgrade is the right time to retire customisations that Odoo 20 now covers as standard. A short Odoo 20 upgrade checklist

  1. Confirm your current version, edition and hosting (Odoo Online, Odoo.sh or on-premise).
  2. List every custom and third-party module, and mark which ones Odoo 20 now covers as standard.
  3. Request an upgraded test database before you commit to a date.
  4. Test real scenarios: VAT returns, ZATCA or FBR submission, payroll, WPS files and inventory valuation.
  5. Check that your new chart of accounts structure still feeds your reports and dashboards.
  6. Decide who pays for AI credits and which processes you will automate first.
  7. Schedule the production upgrade away from period-end, payroll runs and peak trading.

Our Odoo ERP implementation team runs this as a short, fixed-scope project, including any integrations that also need porting.
